South Beach diet

A south beach diet is a popular plan for dieting which initially gained popularity in the United States. It was developed for patients having heart problems and the diet plan is supported with scientific research and proof. A south beach diet helps in minimizing the consumption of useless fat, carbohydrate and helps in production of good carbohydrate and fats in the body. This diet helps in encouraging the body to rely on the right carbs.

The diet is split up into three stages I, II an III.

Stage I

The diet process begins with the first stage. In this stage, there is an attempt for the elimination of insulin resistance through blocking carbohydrates with high glycemic content. Such foods include dairy products, potato, cereals, sugar and candies. In this stage, the body will lose the ability of insulin resistance and start using the excessive fat in the body. It helps in losing up to 13 pounds. In the initial two weeks of the diet plan, the person is treated to a normal food regime including vegetables, meat, nuts, and eggs. It includes three meals per day combined with in between snacks that leaves a dieter fully satisfied. Alcohol is prohibited during the south beach diet. The main benefit of the diet is weight loss, eliminating cravings for sugar and starch and improves body coordination.

Authorized foods during stage I

It includes non vegetarian foods like beef, poultry, fish, pork, and eggs. Specific dairy products like cheese, skimmed milk, and butter. Green leafy vegetables like spinach, beet root, broccoli etc and also nuts.

Prohibited food during stage I

All forms of alcohol, caffeine, pork rinds, foods rich in starch and carbs, fruits and fruit juices, carrots, potatoes and corn. Ketchup sauce should be avoided. Processed meat should not be consumed.

Stage II

After two weeks time, the second stage begins. Foods like whole grain, dairy products and fresh fruits are introduced. The food consumption is reduced compared to the first stage. The diet mainly focuses on reducing the glycemic index. Food materials like potatoes and red wine can be eaten at a moderate level.

Stage III

After the assumed weight is achieved, the next stage starts. It is called maintenance period. It is spread into three servings consisting of whole grains with a fruit each day. The diet focuses on distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy carbohydrates.

Healthy carbs will be rich in fiber content and also have fine fat which has a low index of glycemic. It is digested more easily and has a higher nutrient value. For example, brown rice. While consuming carbohydrates, it is advised to take some fiber and fat along with it to maintain the digestion. While on the diet avoid eating refined and processed foods which has high sugar levels.

The main objective of the south beach diet is to 1) bring permanent changes in a persons eating habits, 2) introduce a variety of foods 3) provide flexibility and comfort. The diet does need any survey of calorie count. It leaves the users satisfied and healthy.
